The Waterfront Commission held a regular meeting on this date at the Town Dock meeting room. Members present were Sandy Grimes, Chairman; Rose Raffo, Vice Chair/Treasurer; Arthur Medeiros; Ethan Grimes. Randy Minor and Bill Robinson were absent.
Chairman Grimes called the meeting to order at 7:07 p.m. He also placed New Business as the first item of business as Senator Andrew Maynard was present.
Senator Maynard was present to discuss the Whale sculpture purchased by Walter Houlihan. He had come before the Commission previously regarding placing the sculpture in the playground area. Members present agreed to wait after checking the minutes of this previous meeting and getting consensus of other members. Also to verify if there is a Committee that oversees the Playground area. Mr. Mederios made a motion to approve placement of the whale sculpture in or near the playground area pending complete discussion with all members. Mr. E. Grimes seconded and voting was unanimous. They thanked Senator Maynard.
Mr. Medeiros made a motion to approve the minutes of the June meeting as presented. Mr. E. Grimes seconded the motion and voting was unanimous.
Mr. Medeiros made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report as read. The balance in the WFC account is $1025. Mr. Grimes seconded the motion and voting was unanimous.
Dock Area housekeeping – Mr. Medeiros reported that this is ongoing.
Maintenance items – Mr. Medeiros reported that there is deterioration to the South side of the Dock building. They had received an estimate last year for $19,600 for metal repairs. The recommendation now is to repair with wood and concrete at an estimated cost of $18,000. Mrs. Raffo made a motion to approve up to $20,000 for repairs using wood and concrete on the Dock building. Mr. E. Grimes seconded the motion and voting was unanimous. Mr. Medeiros added that work would start after the Blessing.
Engineer’s Task list – Ongoing.
South Dock extension – Nothing to report.
Pawcatuck Park –It was reported that the bids have gone out for the dock work. Chairman Grimes had received emails.
Town Dock electrical project – Mr. Medeiros reported that work is going well. They should stop by Wednesday the 18th in preparation of the Blessing of the Fleet. Diana Urban and Andrew Maynard are still working on funding for the project.
Mrs. Raffo referred to a letter received by the Stonington Harbor Management regarding work to be done at the Chinese restaurant adjacent to the Pawcatuck Park. The work involved a dock into the Pawcatuck River. This work has been authorized by the State DEP. Mr. Grimes stated that he would read more information and contact the Zoning Enforcement Officer.
There being no further business to come before the Commission, Mr. Mederios made a motion to adjourn. Mr. E. Grimes seconded the motion and the meeting was unanimously adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
