The Stonington Board of Selectmen held a regular meeting on this date at 7:00 p.m. at the Stonington Police Station. Present were First Selectman William S. Brown, Selectman Stephen E. Bessette and Selectman Peter L. Balestracci. Also present were members of the public and students from Stonington High School.
(1) Call to Order
Mr. Brown called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
(2) Comments from the Public
Vincent Faulise, Pawcatuck, commented that the Board of Selectmen’s meeting was not mentioned in the Westerly Sun. Mr. Brown stated he would pass that message on to the editor. Mr. Faulise commented on the budget process, saying he was disappointed that the next referendum will only be held from noon to 8:00 p.m. instead of 6:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. He also commented that the article in The Day said the poll workers were volunteers, when in fact they are paid for their services.
(3) Bid Awards / Letters of Agreement
a. Highway Department: Hopper Style Spreader
A letter dated April 28, 2006 was received from William Stewart, Superintendent of Highways, requesting that the Board of Selectmen award the bid for a Hopper Style Spreader. Only two bids were received, and he is recommending the bid be awarded to low bidder W.H. Rose, Inc. in the amount of $8,960.
A motion was made by Mr. Balestracci, seconded by Mr. Bessette and unanimously voted to award the bid for the Hopper Style Spreader to W.H. Rose, Inc. as recommended by Mr. Stewart in his April 28, 2006 correspondence.
(4) 9-1-1 Street Numbering - None.
a. Avalonia Land Conservancy request to waive GIS fees
A letter dated April 27, 2006 was received from the Avalonia Land Conservancy, Inc., requesting a waiver of the fee for the GIS mapping CD’s of the Town of Stonington, and permission to copy and use Stonington GIS for Avalonia Land Conservancy purposes. Avalonia is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, tax exempt organization. Brief discussion was held.
A motion was made by Mr. Bessette, seconded by Mr. Balestracci and unanimously voted to waive the fee for the GIS mapping CD’s of the Town of Stonington and grant permission to Avalonia Land Conservancy, Inc. to copy and use Stonington GIS for Avalonia Land Conservancy purposes, conditioned upon their signature on the agreement not to allow other entities access to Stonington’s GIS information.

(6) Re/Appointments Boards and Commissions
a. Town Historian
A letter dated April 28, 2006 was received from Mary Thacher, resigning as Town Historian due to health reasons and recommending the Board appoint Fred Burdick to replace her. Brief discussion was held, and consensus of the Board was that Fred Burdick was a good choice.
A motion was made by Mr. Bessette, seconded by Mr. Balestracci and unanimously voted to accept the resignation of Mary Thacher as Town Historian. A letter of thanks will be forwarded to Ms. Thacher.
A motion was then made by Mr. Balestracci, seconded by Mr. Bessette and unanimously voted to accept Ms. Thacher’s recommendation and appoint Mr. Fred Burdick as Town Historian, effective immediately
